I think the eyes say it all in this image! I created her in the same way I did yesterdays image: using a collage of book pages, - [Doodling...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/doodling/) - I've been creating fine pen doodles, sometimes known as zentangles, for years now and have sketchbooks full of them. When I started creating these, the originals were always black and white and if I added colour I did it digitally after I'd scanned the originals. I was very precious with those originals - too frightened - [Blogging Along With Effy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blogging-along-with-effy/) - I've been thinking for a while that it was time I started blogging again - its hard to believe that its over a year since I last wrote a post - so when I saw Effy's invitation to blog along with her during September, I thought it would be the perfect time to re-start my - [Virtual Reality!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/virtual-reality/) - I'd been reading online about Tilt Brush the new virtual reality 3D painting app by Google, thinking that it looked like a lot of fun. So I was really excited yesterday at work to be given the opportunity to try it out - absolutely awesome!! This is a picture of me creating my 3D landscape - [Anticipation](https://www.artimess.co.uk/anticipation/) - I'm really grateful for the inspiration I have had from Effy Wild and Sarah Trumpp this year. This page was inspired by both of them. The idea for the spread came from my response to Effy's Book of Days prompt for the 29th April, and Sarah's week 18, Journal 52 video inspired me to try - [Nearly May](https://www.artimess.co.uk/nearly-may/) - Nearly May - and the weather's still no better. We've had a mixture of snow and hail storms this week! But it hasn't stopped me making art. I'm really loving working in this A6 journal - it's perfect for those days when the big journal is too intimidating! I created this spread using watercolour paints, - [April Showers!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/april-showers/) - So far this month has been living up to it's reputation for April showers. Puddles like this have been everywhere. But we have been blessed with some wonderful sunny days as well. I began April by creating a couple of backgrounds in my new A6 art journal. For this first one, I started off by - [My Story and Spooky Images!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/my-story-and-spooky-images/) - A few weeks ago I attended the last of a series of Person Centred Expressive Arts Workshops with Dinah Brown up in the Lake District. One of our tasks over the weekend was to create a loom from natural materials into which we wove words from stories we had written. This is my story loom. - [The last of the Faces](https://www.artimess.co.uk/the-last-of-the-faces/) - I can't believe that a whole month has gone by since I last posted anything here. I've made plenty of art - just haven't got round to sharing it. So here goes. I'm a bit late uploading them, but here are the last of my faces for 29 Faces 2016. Yeah - I made it!! - [Having Fun and Getting Messy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/having-fun-and-getting-messy/) - I thought it was about time I caught up with posting some images; I've spent so much time having fun and getting messy in my art journals that I've not got round to uploading any of my work. This image was inspired by a Journal 52 prompt to pick a zany word and illustrate it. - [Inspired by Challenges](https://www.artimess.co.uk/inspired-by-challenges/) - Since the beginning of this year I have been inspired by so many challenges and classes. Although I haven't necessarily completed all the prompts and suggestions, I've found that having so much inspiration has enabled me to maintain a much more consistent artistic practice. I have been making art every day - and am definitely - [Changing Focus](https://www.artimess.co.uk/changing-focus/) - Since the end of last year, my focus has been changing. I have been working more playfully, experimenting with new techniques and materials and am in the process of developing my own unique portrait style. Creating this image, I discovered that my new Tombow pens don't work very effectively over the top of sprayed on - [Trying Out My New Pens](https://www.artimess.co.uk/trying-out-my-new-pens/) - For Christmas I got these Tombow Dual Brushpens 18 Colour Set (Primary) and have been itching to try them out ever since. Today I finally had enough time to play! I had already created the background using watercolour paint, so I drew the figure using pencil, outlined it using a uni pin fine liner, then - [Happy Christmas!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/happy-christmas-2/) - There's just time for one more post before Christmas - my Christmas angel wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas! I like to paint an angel card each year at a this time but often have difficulty getting started. So Effy's Soul Friend Angel Mini mixed media class was the perfect inspiration I needed to - [Soft Leather Journal Cover](https://www.artimess.co.uk/soft-leather-journal-cover/) - Ever since I started Radiant 2 and made my own Effidori, I've been wanting to get a leather version for my handbag journal and have had my eye on a soft leather journal cover from YarnTreeStudioUK on Etsy. And yeah - I finally have this one - it's so beautiful! I chose the Quarto size - [Almost Winter Solstice](https://www.artimess.co.uk/almost-winter-solstice/) - It's almost time for the Winter Solstice and I've been starting to reflect on this last year in readiness for the new cycle about to begin. I've also been making a fair amount of artwork inspired mainly by the amazing lessons in Effy's Radiant 2 course - I thought it was about time I posted - [Visible collage!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/visible-collage/) - It's been a while since I made a collage that stayed visible after I completed the piece. Normally by the time I finish the image, the collage is buried under layers of paint, stamping or stencilling or a mixture of all three. But the last two classes I've done as part of Radiant 2, both - [Loving the Effidori!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/loving-the-effidori/) - I am so loving my new Effidori! I always love learning new book making techniques and Effy's lesson on how to make the Effidori was so easy to follow that I enjoyed every minute of it! And I'm loving the results - both the way it looks and using it as a journal. Thank you - [Getting messy...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/getting-messy-3/) - I've been getting messy and having fun! Not content with having recently signed up to 21 Secrets Fall 2015, I've just signed up to Effy Wild's Radiant 2 Course which started on 1st October. So much juicy, messy goodness to choose from! I'm loving every minute of it!! And just for good measure. I've signed - [Playing with Layers](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-layers/) - I really enjoyed all the mixed media work I've been doing recently, so I decided to do some more playing with layers, both physical and digital. This first image started out as a collage using a mixture of old papers, book pages, old paint stained tissues, and magazine clippings. This was followed by a liberal - [Taking the time...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/taking-the-time/) - I have to admit, I'm really enjoying taking the time to be creative again. I've worked my way through the free workshops for the first time now, but am thinking of revisiting some of them as they were so full of inspiration that I'm sure I've missed some of it first time round. But I'll - [Brushing off the Cobwebs!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/brushing-off-the-cobwebs/) - As part of my September fresh start, Ive been brushing the cobwebs off my creative skills and learning some new techniques as I've played along with a whole bunch of fabulous artists - free workshops that Connie Solera gave as a bonus for signing up to Fall 2015 21 Secrets. I love the variety of - [Fresh Start!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/fresh-start/) - The 1st September, time to make a fresh start! As you might have noticed over the last day or so, I've been busy giving my site a face lift, playing around with some new colours and a different header. It feels like it's time to do some serious creating! August has been a kind of - [Found Objects and Art Doll](https://www.artimess.co.uk/found-objects-and-art-doll/) - Today at Uni, we made art using materials we had found during the course of our journey in to class. I carefully gathered my bag of found objects and waited to see what would emerge. I was totally unprepared for this amazing doll! In response to our artwork we were invited to write a short - [In the meantime...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/in-the-meantime/) - In the meantime, and between creating mandalas of all kinds, I've been experimenting and playing with paint. I've been applying the paint to the page straight from the bottle, then using a tool intended for shaping clay to mix and spread it around the page. I must admit, I quite like the resulting dimensional abstract - [Spirals and Labyrinths!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/spirals-and-labyrinths/) - Stage three of the great round of mandala, Labyrinth/Spiral, is one where I feel completely at home! I have loved every moment of this month. I haven't got round to creating a physical dreamcatcher yet... ...but I started the month by creating this image of one using Derwent Intense watercolour pencils. I am still waiting - [Into the Bliss!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/into-the-bliss/) - I've just realised how long it is since I posted anything online. I've been busy keeping up with Julie's Mandala Magic classes, I just haven't got round to posting anything online. So here's the first instalment - moving on from the Void to the Bliss... ... I created this page of symbols that are important - [Over Half Way!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/over-half-way/) - We're over halfway through the void now, and the mandalas are still flowing. Journalling with words doesn't come easily to me - I prefer to express my thoughts in visual ways... ...so I've been up in my studio for a while today responding to my thoughts. This is my first completed mandala painted with very - [Mandala Response](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mandala-response/) - I'd been thinking about the void, and the cycle of the year and the new life germinating in the darkness... ...I picked up some bottles of ready mix paint and a paint scraper, and created this mandala response. - [Journey Through the Void](https://www.artimess.co.uk/journey-through-the-void/) - In between updating my website, creating mandalas and starting work on my next uni assignment, Ive been just a little bit busy - but the website and mandalas have been great fun to do! Still travelling through the void, I made this 'universe void' mandala. While I was making it, I had a slight accident - [I just couldn't resist...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/i-just-couldnt-resist/) - I just couldn't resist! There I was closing down my computer for the night, when I had this thought, "I wonder what the Swirls image would look like as a mandala?" And, being me, I couldn't wait till tomorrow to try it out - so here are the results! This is the first one... ...and - [The Great Round of Mandala](https://www.artimess.co.uk/the-great-round-of-mandala/) - Mandala Magic, Julie Gibbons year long Mandala course started this week, so I've been busy creating mandalas for the first round. The course is based on exploring the twelve archetypal stages of the great round of mandala developed by Joan Kellogg and written about by Susanne F Fincher in her book called The Mandala Workbook: - ["One Man's Trash..."](https://www.artimess.co.uk/one-mans-trash/) - You've probably heard the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure". This latest mandala is made almost entirely from "one man's trash"! One of my workplaces have a large laser cutter which collects quantities of leftover bits from the work that people do on it. This mandala is created from some of those leftover - [Playing with Mandalas](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-mandalas/) - Thinking about mandalas, I created this hand drawn one in my small journal the other day. But as usual, I couldn't just leave it at that. I had to play with it once I'd scanned it. I started off by adding some 'twirl', then blended the two together to come up with the final version. - [Happy New Year!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/happy-new-year-3/) - Happy New Year to you all! December flew past, taken up with finishing my dissertation followed by a really relaxing family Christmas - it seems like ages since I last posted. But I have been busy creating! It's become a habit over the last few years to use this workbook from Susannah Conway to review - [Last Mandala](https://www.artimess.co.uk/last-mandala/) - I've just finished the last mandala from Julie Gibbon's Mandala Magic course I'd seen these 'Hamsa' symbols before, but never knew what they meant. Apparently if the hand is upright it represents protection against the 'evil eye'; if it is inverted, it represents God's goodness and blessings. I enjoyed creating it, and I love the - [Mandala Magic](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mandala-magic/) - Just a quick post to show you my second mandala created on Julie Gibbon's Mandala Magic Course. It's called an Intention Mandala, and I really enjoyed creating it. It has a hidden layer behind the collage - powerful stuff! I'm working on number three now. Watch this space! - [Creativity Rocks!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/creativity-rocks/) - Creativity rocks! I've been so busy writing my dissertation that I haven't had time to do anything else. But I took a couple of days off last week and did a bit of catching up! A couple of weeks ago we had our dissertation tutorials and as part of the tutorial, our group were asked - [Old Photo Rummaging!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/old-photo-rummaging/) - The other day, while rummaging through my photo files looking for an old remembered image, I came across three images which caught my attention: a bag of grapes, a string sculpture, and some old seed heads. They looked like they might work well together... ...so I just had to try them out with some digital - [Reflections and Light](https://www.artimess.co.uk/reflections-and-light/) - It all started with a piece of white paper and four bottles of ready mix poster paint in blue, yellow, purple and fuscia pink... ...I squirted the paint into the paper, folded it in half, and squigged it everywhere! This photo was taken when it was all gleaming and wet. As soon as it was - [Two More Pages!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/two-more-pages/) - Two more pages to add to the steadily growing collection! Another painted postcard for journalling on... ...created using acrylic paint, a stencil and acrylic ink. The black blots remind me of seahorses or maybe glow-worms. What do you think? And another page in my recycled journal. This started out as a collage with acrylic paint. - [Digital Magic!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-magic/) - Todays first image started out as an acrylic painted background in my handmade journal, which I transformed with a bit of digital magic! When I first created this, I called it 'Christmas Background' because I thought the colours looked very festive... ...then I played digital - adding a digital image of Molly doll and a - [Filling the Journal!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/filling-the-journal/) - I'm slowly filling my recycled journal! If you look closely you can see the fabric strips down the centre of the page marking the end of one signature and the beginning of another. I created the background using acrylic paint in layers and used an old credit card to scrape the final layer on which - [Therapy Journalling](https://www.artimess.co.uk/therapy-journalling/) - This morning I woke up with a head full of thoughts related to my personal therapy yesterday which I wanted to record. I wrote the thoughts on the back of a postcard, then painted the other side using acrylic paint. To keep my thoughts private, I made this little pocket using scrapbooking paper in my - [Journalling Every Day](https://www.artimess.co.uk/journalling-every-day/) - In a new effort to inject some discipline into my art making, I've joined Lani Gerity's Morning Pages Daily Art Practice eCourse and am attempting to start journalling every day! But as usual with these things, Im already behind with posting the images, so here goes for a catch up. I started by creating this - [Inter--connected--ness--](https://www.artimess.co.uk/inter-connected-ness/) - Ever since I can remember I have always believed in the interconnectedness of everything. So when I came across this Pueblo Indian saying in Way of the Doll: Art and Craft of Personal Transformation by Cassandra Light, I couldn't help but feel a journal page needed to be created. I decided to use my recycled - [Patchwork Doll!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/patchwork-doll/) - Continuing with my doll making addiction, the other day I got an urge to make a patchwork doll! I adapted the pattern from Elinor Peace Bailey's book Mother Plays With Dolls ... and Finds an Important Key to Unlocking Creativity, and decided to have a go at hand painting a face... ...and this is the - [Addicted to Doll Making!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/addicted-to-doll-making/) - Did I mention that I am becoming addicted to doll making? This one's taking a bit longer than the others have, and she's still not quite finished, but I thought you might like to see her anyway. The pattern came from Elinor Peace Bailey's book Mother Plays With Dolls ... and Finds an Important Key - [Breathing space!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/breathing-space/) - I've finally finished handing in my written work for this academic year and have a little bit of breathing space before the next marathon of academic writing begins!! I haven't done any painting yet, but I have been playing digital and making dolls! It never ceases to amaze me how many variations it's possible to - [Melt Down!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/melt-down/) - Still struggling to keep up with my studies - yesterday I had a total meltdown! I stormed off to my studio and started squeezing paint! This image really doesn't do justice to the dimensional nature of the finished piece, so I captured these close-ups to show you just how much paint I used! I called - [Academic Overload!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/academic-overload/) - I've been totally overwhelmed by academic overload of late! But I have been painting ... here are some of my latest creations! I've been using quite a lot of thread and string in my art work recently - a reflection on how I've been feeling, perhaps? I created this using recycled cardboard and packaging, string, - ["Paint, Glorious Paint..."](https://www.artimess.co.uk/paint-glorious-paint/) - "Paint, glorious paint..." a slight misquote I grant you - but after a long absence (at least a week!) its so good to be slinging paint again!! Even in my little journal! The colour's not very good in the photo, the original is a more peacocky colour! I created it with some acrylic paint, stencils - [Call of the Paint!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/call-of-the-paint/) - I thought it was about time I caught up with posting some more pictures from my journal. This is my interpretation of the last of the sketch noting prompts. The first one is pretty simple to interpret, but can you guess what the second one is all about? I ran out of time on the - [Just in case...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/just-in-case/) - Just in case you thought I'd forgotten to play digital, I had a little break from essay writing tonight and played with gradients and blending. First I made it in colour... ... and then I desaturated it to turn it black and white. I can't decide which one I like best. Which one do you - [When Frogs Sing 2014](https://www.artimess.co.uk/when-frogs-sing-2014/) - Just because I haven't been posting, doesn't mean I haven't been journalling! I treated myself to a little pocket journal, and have been doing my five minutes + every day! I made this title page at the beginning of the book... ... using my Rotring Rapidograph pen to draw with, then colouring with watecolour pencils - [Another Journal Page!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/another-journal-page/) - Following on from yesterday's success, I've managed to create another journal page using the scanned digital technique. Yay! This is the background I created in my altered journal using acrylic paint, home made stamps and stencils. And this is my digital interpretation of todays 'When Frogs Sing' journal prompt. I finally got around to processing - [Word for the Year - 2014](https://www.artimess.co.uk/word-for-the-year-2014/) - Ive been wanting to keep a Journal for a long time now but haven't managed to get started. So when I saw Rhomany's 'When Frogs Sing', Journalling course I signed up for the year! I had to smile to myself while watching todays video - I have this little problem - I love making mixed - [Happy New Year!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/happy-new-year-2/) - Happy New Year to you all! This post has been a long time coming, but December was a totally chaotic month with so much going on that I scarcely had time to breathe! However... January is here now, and I have started creating art again! In fact I spent most of New Year's Day painting - [Darkness Digitised!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/darkness-digitised/) - As promised, here are the images from Sunday with some digital enhancing added. Which do you you prefer? The original straight from the camera images, or these digitally enhanced images? I'd be really interested to know what you think. - [Colour and Light](https://www.artimess.co.uk/colour-and-light/) - In contrast to yesterday's post, and just to prove that I have been creating some of my more usual bright work, here are the latest two - digitally altered of course!! This is my favourite - I love the softness of the colours and the textures which the tissue collage adds to the image. I - [Out of the Darkness!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/out-of-the-darkness/) - I haven't created my postcards yet, but I have been producing some extremely dark art as a result of the emotions released by my studies and the therapy I have started as a course requirement. It started with this piece, created after my first therapy session last Thursday. Although I could have chosen an Art - [Postcard Swap](https://www.artimess.co.uk/postcard-swap/) - Life has been a little manic since my last post. But I couldn't resist the call to the latest iHannah's DIY Post Card Swap. If you love mail art and receiving beautiful works of art through the mail then you really should try it! Just click on the link above or the link button in - [New Start!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/new-start/) - Today I have been getting ready for a new start. Tomorrow I start my Art Psychotherapy Masters Degree! I was hoping to do some painting today, but last minute form filling and organisation took over leaving me just enough time for a little digital blending but not much else! A little digital blending and some - [More Notan!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-notan/) - I'm finding this Notan quite addictive... so here's another one. I cut this one a bit differently. Instead of folding the paper into four before cutting, I only folded it in half; and rearranged a couple of the pieces to break the symmetry. I wasn't sure which way up it should go, but I think - [What is Notan?](https://www.artimess.co.uk/what-is-notan/) - One of the problems I've had during the move is that I haven't had time to keep up with my daily blog reading list. I know I could have just marked my backlist as read and started again, but I'm glad I didn't or I might have missed this post from Karen Isaacson about Notan. - [Painting Big!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/painting-big/) - Up until the advent of the new easel, the biggest I had ever painted was a double page in my 12"x9" Strathmore journal! To be honest, I had never had the courage to try anything bigger. But that's all changed now! With all the recycled cardboard from moving, I have lots of larger canvases to - [Finally All Done!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finally-all-done/) - I can't believe how long its been since I last posted here! I've decided that unpacking is a lot more stressful than packing ... but it's finally all done - including the 5 boxes which my brother returned to me (after looking after them for the last 18 months) during his visit last week! So... - [Struggling to Create!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/struggling-to-create/) - Since moving to our new home, I have really been struggling to be creative. It's not been helped by the wasps who have invaded my new studio space making it difficult for me to get unpacked. Not that we haven't been busy. We treated ourselves to a brand new Dyson. I really love the quality - [Digital Blending!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-blending-2/) - As promised yesterday... ...today I played with a spot of digital blending! I blended the original photograph together with a scan of the blue green mail art I created a few days ago. I'm quite pleased with the way it's turned out. What do you think? - [Exploring the Garden!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/exploring-the-garden/) - My brain is willing, but my 60 year old body is feeling the strain after all the exertions of the last few days... but each day the house is getting straighter. I didn't get as far as doing any artwork today, however I did do a spot of exploring in our new garden. It's rather - [Back On Line!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/back-on-line/) - I know I only missed one day, but it feels so good to be back on-line! We're safely installed in our new house - and about half-way through the unpacking! The kitchen is more or less straight, the living room is beginning to show some floor space, and I hope to get the clothes unpacked - [Almost There!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/almost-there/) - We're almost there! Today we got the keys to our new house and took the first few bits down in the car; tomorrow the removal men move all our belongings and we get to sleep in our new home for the first time!! It's especially exciting for us because it will be the first unfurnished - [All Packed Up!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/all-packed-up/) - All Packed up and ready to go... in just over 12 hours we'll have the keys to our new home - very exciting! These two boxes contain essentials ... my paints and brushes, recycled stamps, gel medium, stencils and many other goodies that I have been using for the last week or so. I feel - [Playing With Paint!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-paint/) - It's less than two days now before we get the keys to our new home and it's getting to the point where I will have to seal up the boxes with my paint in. But I was determined to have one last play before that happens. As you can see by the state of my - [Front Room Blend!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/front-room-blend/) - I took this picture of our front room today to show my daughter how the packing was going. I was wondering how it would look if I blended some of my scanned mail art with it ... ... this was the first version with just one image blended... ... and this is the second version - [Purple Mail Art!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/purple-mail-art/) - Four days left and counting! The packing is done except for the last few bits, all the boxes are taped up except for three of my art supply boxes, so we're almost there!! Carrying on the addiction, here's another recycled padded envelope. This one originated from my pen supplier! I started out with the 'Fragile' - [More Mail Art!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-mail-art/) - Moving day is less than 5 days away. Almost everything is in boxes, but I keep delaying sealing them up so that I can keep painting! We're moving into deep clean mode now - cleaning out cupboards, washing down paintwork and stuff like that. I ache all over from all the unaccustomed exercise! I think - [More Link Love!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-link-love/) - It's Friday again, and I'm joining with Tammy from Daisy Yellow on her link-love mission. Today Tammy suggests we link to 5 of our favourite topics... so here goes. Healing and Natural Living: I love reading Rose's blog Walk in the Woods and looking at all her beautiful photographs of the things that she makes. - [Mail Art!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mail-art/) - I'm never quite sure what qualifies as 'Mail Art'. Does it have to be something you make to send through the post, or can it be recycling something that has already been sent through the post? I'm sure someone will enlighten me, but in the meantime, I'm calling what I created today 'Mail Art'! We - [Fairytale Blending](https://www.artimess.co.uk/fairytale-blending/) - Whenever I create anything, I take scans of my work through all its stages, so that I can use the images for backgrounds and texture in future work. Today I took two of those intemediate scans of my last two projects and played digital blending with them. I think the result looks like the background - [Finally Finished!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finally-finished-2/) - At Last, I have finally finished last weeks Life Book 2013 lesson! For the final touch I added the Thich Nhat Hanh quotation using die-cut letters. Now I'm off to pack some more boxes! - [More Layers!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-layers/) - I managed a few more layers last night and was hoping to add some text today but somehow the time eluded me! So here's the next instalment... ... first I added some layers of acrylic paint and some stencilling... ... then I collaged my meditating lady after painting her using acrylic paint and a die-cut - [More Boxes!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-boxes/) - As moving day approaches it's getting more and more difficult to do much artwork as little by little my supplies are disappearing into more boxes! As you can see... the piles of boxes are growing nicely ... ... but the artwork is not keeping up! This is the first collage layer for last week's Life - [Blending Summer Feet!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blending-summer-feet/) - The last few times I've been out, I've been snapping pictures of summer feet.... and true to form - I wondered what they'd look like if I played a spot of digital blending with them. I took two of my photographs, added an artwork scan and whizzled the blending buttons. I rather like the result - [Link Love!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/link-love/) - I finally decided to take the plunge and join Tammy from Daisy Yellow on her link-love mission. Today Tammy suggests we link to 5 of our favourite tutorials... so here goes. Julie's blog is a constant source of inspiration and she has so many cool tutorials that it was difficult to choose just one, but - [I Begin...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/i-begin/) - The 1st of August has arrived bringing with it the start of Effy's challenge to blogalong with her for 30 days in August. There's still time to join in if you haven't already, just click on the link below. Being a little slow off the mark, I have just decided to join in Effy's Inner - [Finished Page!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finished-page/) - At last all the layers have dried and it's safe to scan the finished page. I love how the finished page turned out, and I had such fun making it. The only tricky part was managing the wet media on the thin pages of my new journal, but I managed that by starting with a - [Mixed Media Madness!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mixed-media-madness/) - I've been working on a mixed media piece in my new journal for the last couple of days and experimenting with the camera on my iPhone as well. Inspired by this post from Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, I spent a while cutting out this quotation to use on my new page. After I'd finished the cutting - [On the move!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/on-the-move/) - We're on the move again! I got accepted onto an MA Art Psychotherapy course to start in September and we're in the process of moving house so that I can be nearer to the course. Right now we're surrounded by boxes in various stages of being packed! As we could well be without a broadband - [Blogalong with Effy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blogalong-with-effy/) - I've not been blogging very regularly of late, so when I got effy's newsletter today and saw that she was hosting a blogalong during August, I thought it would be a good idea to sign up in an attempt to complete thirty posts in thirty days! Meanwhile, I've been back to playing catch up with - [Kaleidoscope Mandala!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-kaleidoscope-mandala/) - I have been busy painting and working on Rae Missigman's 21 Secrets 2013 Class, but I have nothing to show yet, so I thought I'd share some digital playing instead. I was catching up with my reading list yesterday and came across this post from iHannah about creating digital kaleidoscope mandalas. Well - I just - [Recycled Journal](https://www.artimess.co.uk/recycled-journal/) - Ever since I saw Rae Missigman's 'Go Green' class on 21 Secrets 2013 I have been longing to have a go at making a recycled journal following her instructions. I have been an avid recycler for many years and have made use of many books in art projects, but I have never before taken one - [New iPhone Case](https://www.artimess.co.uk/new-iphone-case/) - I really liked the monster in my Finding Faces picture, and fancied having a go at using the image to create a case for my iPhone so I hunted around the internet to find a Uk based company I could use. The company I finally chose was photobox. The whole process of uploading the image - [Faces and Emotions](https://www.artimess.co.uk/faces-and-emotions/) - The last part of Misi B's Life Book 2013 Class was to journal about emotions on the back of the page then to draw a group of faces showing different emotions. Not the easiest thing in the world for me - but I gave it a go! I 'wrote' the journalling using acrylic paint, added - [Very Messy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/very-messy/) - Late last night, about 1am, I decided to start Misi B's Life Book 2013 lesson. I can always judge how much I've enjoyed something by the amount of paint I get all over me - I'm still picking the paint off my fingers now!! I only got as far as the first background, but I - [Finding Faces](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finding-faces/) - Today, I was very brave, despite serious doubts about my ability to do this, I sat down with a piece of charcoal and my acrylic paint and found the faces in my background. Very scary stuff!! The first two faces on the right were easy to find. The third face top left took a little - [Collage Lady](https://www.artimess.co.uk/collage-lady-2/) - As you may have noticed, I've got very behind with my Life Book 2013 classes. So I thought this week was time to rectify the situation and try to catch up a little! Rather than go back to where I got stuck, I thought I'd start with this weeks lesson from Joann Loftus and then - [Finally!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finally/) - Finally! I've at long last finished projects #5 and #6 in Kate Crane's 21 Secrets 2013 class. I started project #5 with a collage of printed artwork covered with acrylic paint. I used handmade stamps to add more depth then added a computer printed quotation and some grungeboard keys covered with metallic flakes. Lastly I - [Playing with Ink!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-ink/) - Project #4 in Kate Crane's 21 Secrets 2013 class is all about playing with ink! I managed to make quite a mess and had wonderfully coloured fingers for a day! I started off with a piece of recycled cardboard and covered it with a patchwork of torn music squares then covered that with white gesso. - [Transitions and Changes](https://www.artimess.co.uk/transitions-and-changes/) - Project #3 in Kate Crane's 21 Secrets 2013 class called for us to draw three people representations and journal on their bodies. Just prior to watching Kate's video, I had been reading these articles by William Bridges about transition and change: their meanings, the differences between them and their relationship to each other. While William - [Recycled Packaging!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/recycled-packaging/) - We seem to have bought a lot of books just lately, acquiring as a by-product lots of those cardboard sleeves that books come wrapped in. So when I looked at Kate Crane's 21 Secrets 2013 Class and saw that it was about trying out lots of different techniques, I thought the book packaging would make - [Riot of Colour!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/riot-of-colour/) - Today was such a beautiful day, I went out for a walk with my camera. Everywhere was a riot of colour: roses, bluebells, campions, clover, wild garlic, buttercups and daisies, to name the few flowers I know the names of, all showing off their vibrant colours in the long overdue sunshine. I took over 100 - [Funky Foam Stamps](https://www.artimess.co.uk/funky-foam-stamps/) - Today, just for a change, I thought I'd make some funky foam stamps to use in my backgrounds. It's been ages since I made any and I'd forgotten how much fun it is to make them and how versatile they can be. I know some people use wood burning tools to melt the foam, but - [Hand Made Art Journal](https://www.artimess.co.uk/hand-made-art-journal/) - Phew! - I finally finished my latest project, a hand made art journal! I started out by following Joanne Sharpe's class in 21 Secrets 2013. As usual, I didn't quite follow the instructions! Joanne taught us six embroidery stitches to use on our panels - I used three of them plus two of my own. - [More Paper Cutting!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-paper-cutting/) - I just couldn't resist doing some more paper cutting today. I drew the design, a kind of flower mandala, cut it out then thought it might look good with some colour. I scanned the cut out to print it, but couldn't resist playing digital blending with it first... ... I rather like how this one - [Having fun!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/having-fun/) - Today I've been having fun trying out some new techniques and ideas. I found this first technique in the latest copy of Craft Stamper magazine. As usual I didn't have all the suggested ingredients, so I improvised! I started by gluing a piece of baking foil to a piece of recycled packaging card, then coloured - [Funky Blending!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/funky-blending/) - The other weekend we went to York to visit a friend and were taken to visit the city's nature reserve. Always on the look out for a photo opportunity, I noticed these unusual plants growing just behind a bench and had to get down in the dirt to photograph them. Later, playing on the computer, - [Glitter Web Complete!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/glitter-web-complete/) - Finally, at long last, my sparkling glitter web is complete! The photo really doesn't show just how sparkly it is, so I've included this detail shot. Click on it to see the sparkles! I love working with Twinkling H20's, but I've never actually used them as watercolour paints before - I must admit I struggled - [Sidetracked Again!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/sidetracked-again/) - Ooops! - I got sidetracked again! But this Life Book lesson from Dawn DeVries Skol was just so much fun! I started by painting the background using acrylic paint. I decided that I wanted the self-portrait to be transparent so I printed it on overhead projector film then cut it out and stuck it down - [Let Your Light Shine!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/let-your-light-shine/) - The trouble with being signed up to two online courses at the same time, is that it's easy to neglect one in favour of the other. But I just couldn't resist trying this lesson, Let Your Light Shine, by Joann Loftus from the Life Book 2013 course. As with many of the lessons, I didn't - [And More Glitter!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/and-more-glitter/) - I have never been a great one for glitter, although I have recently become quite addicted to twinkling H2O's. So when I read the introduction to my next 21 Secrets 2013 class I was a little nervous. Glitter - and more glitter! Entitled Sparkle-Arkle, Dion Dior's class promised lots of light catching paint and glitter. - [Playing Games](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-games/) - I've been busy altering tins and making game cards for Diana Trout's class on the 21 Secrets 2013 course. I took two old cough lozenge tins, sanded them and primed them with gesso, then painted them with acrylic paint. It was not a success - the paint started to flake off! So I covered the - [Snow White Kite](https://www.artimess.co.uk/snow-white-kite/) - Wow - I'm impressed! The finished painting actually looks more or less as it did in my head! This is the final version of my painting for Danielle Daniel's class (part of the 21 Secrets 2013 course). Thank you for the tip about the 'Stabilo All' pencils Danielle - worked like a dream! They have - [Getting Messy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/getting-messy-2/) - Today I've been working on Danielle Daniel's class, part of the 21 Secrets 2013 course. I had great fun and got very messy creating this background. I started out with a collage of printed papers from my earlier artwork, then added acrylic paint using a variety of techniques. Next I added journalling followed by more - [Bloom Like Flowers](https://www.artimess.co.uk/bloom-like-flowers/) - “The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.” I thought this quotation from Thich Nhat Hanh was very appropriate for my journal spread inspired by Cathy Bluteau's class on the 21 Secrets 2013 course. Why is it that whenever you want - [Just Let Go...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/just-let-go/) - "Just let go... ... and soar to the heights ..." was inspired by the second part of Carissa Paige's class on the 21 Secrets 2013 course. That's me painted over to look like a bird soaring in the sky - Oh how I envy the birds their ability to soar on the wind! I created a - [Mixed Media Fun!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mixed-media-fun/) - Yeah! - at last, I got to play mixed media!! I had so much fun! I finally got the courage this year and signed up for 21 Secrets 2013. As I have never really done any proper art journalling, I treated myself to a smart Strathmore Mixed Media Journal - it was a dream to - [Beautiful Postcards](https://www.artimess.co.uk/beautiful-postcards/) - I had so much fun in March making 10 postcards to send out around the world as part of the iHanna Postcard Swap 2013, but this month has been just as much fun seeing what the postman has brought me every day. These are the postcards I have received so far - aren't they beautiful! - [Quirky Bird Bug!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/quirky-bird-bug/) - Yes, I have definitely got the Quirky Bird Bug - I can't seem to stop drawing them! This time I decided to try painting one on material. I primed the material using clear gesso then painted the bird using a mixture of acrylic paint and neocolour crayons exactly the same way I did on the - [More Quirky Birds!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-quirky-birds/) - Carrying on with this week's Life Book 2013 lesson from Tamara, I got a bit carried away with drawing quirky birds. I drew four instead of two! - oops!!! These are painted on the back of the other four and the whole image folds up like a concertina. Like the others, I created the background - [Quirky Birds!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/quirky-birds/) - In this week's Life Book 2013 lesson from Tamara she taught us how to draw these quirky birds. They were so much fun! I created the background using spray inks and stencils, followed by neocolour crayons and acrylic paint and stencils. When it was all dry I covered it in clear gesso. I drew the - [Gratitude!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/gratitude/) - Still playing catch up with Life Book 2013 classes, today I finished this piece for Tam's week 10 lesson. I decided to add my own twist to the lesson by folding my paper in half and cutting a heart shape in the front half to make a heart door. After cutting the door, I started - [Monster Pop-Up!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/monster-pop-up/) - I have always loved pop-up cards so this Life Book lesson from Mitsi B really appealed to me, and I loved every bit of the process of making it. I started by journalling over both sides of the paper using a water soluble graphite stick, then activated it to stop it bleeding. I added big - [Connections!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/connections/) - I've got a bit behind with the Life Book 2013 Classes, so I was quite pleased when I managed to finish Mindy Lacefield's lesson today. I had great fun with it, but was a little unsure of how the whimsies would turn out using Mindy's draw in paint technique! I started out by writing 7 - [Zentangle Star](https://www.artimess.co.uk/zentangle-star/) - Today I finally got around to finishing my latest zentangle canvas! I drew it at the beginning of the month but didn't get round to colouring it till today. This was the original, drawn on a canvas board using a unipin fine line pen... ... and this is the final version, coloured using Twinkling H2O's. - [Playing with Stencils](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-stencils-2/) - Since finishing my postcards, I have been busy playing with the new stencils I got last weekend. I always start my playing in my everyday notebook/journal, which is not quite big enough for the whole stencil. I had a tiny bit of Light Molding Paste left in my pot so I thought I'd try it - [Handmade Postcards ](https://www.artimess.co.uk/handmade-postcards/) - Last Sunday we travelled to Harrogate and visited the Great Northern Papercrafts Extravaganza - great fun! I got some really cool stencils, stamps and dies which I have been playing with this week. On Monday I signed up to take part in the iHannah's DIY Postcard Swap 2013. (There's still time to sign up if - [Totally Addictive!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/totally-addictive/) - The trouble with playing digital is that it's totally addictive! I've always loved kaleidoscopes so I had to have another go. Using the same original images as yesterday, this is today's version! I think this is my favourite so far. What do you think? - [Playing with Blending!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-blending/) - I've been so busy drawing and painting lately that I haven't had time for playing with digital blending. So today I thought I'd rectify that omission! I started out with an artwork scan and two photographs. This was the first result. I really like this one, but decided to have a go at making a - [Mystery Muse](https://www.artimess.co.uk/mystery-muse/) - Now that February is over and my Mystery Musee has safely received her gifts, I can show you what I've been up to! I took part in the Artella Mystery Muse 2013 Project; you submit your details and a word which sums up the year for you and get given in return a "Mystery Musee" - [Zentangling again!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/zentangling-again/) - I've been zentangling again! Only this time I forgot to scan before I started painting. I chose an Ankh as my central image - said to represent eternal life, dating back to Egyptian times. As with the others, I drew it using a unipin fine line pen and coloured it using Twinkling H2O's. I added - [60 Goals!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/60-goals/) - I just read this post from Samie (Journal Girl) and (having just passed a major milestone) was inspired to create a similar piece for myself. Only trouble is - I have more than double the goals to create. But I did it!! I had great fun! I started off with a gesso base, then added - [More Zentangles!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-zentangles/) - I've rather got hooked on these Zentangle doodles - looks like I'm going for a series! I chose to use the sun as my central image this time. Everything is drawn freehand, which is why the box is not quite square to the page on this one - just call it artistic license! Once again - [Doodling and H2O's!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/doodling-and-h2os/) - Still inspired by Jodi Ohl's Just do it - Free Art Friday post, I decided to create another stained glass image, but to cover it in doodles in the style of my zentangle drawings. I used a 5"x7" canvas board to draw it on. I doodled using a Unipin fine line pen which claims to - [Blending and Faces!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blending-and-faces-2/) - I've been playing blending again! I made a stained glass window image inspired by Jodi Ohl's Just do it - Free Art Friday post. But unlike Jodi, I didn't doodle on my painting, I scanned it and played digital blending with it! Then I thought it might be a good idea to finish face #16 - [Dance!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/dance/) - I'm still having great fun playing with Carolyn Dube's free Use Your Words workshop. Today I finished Wednesdays assignment. I started by printing the quotation and gluing it to the page, then added colour using a mixture of dripped and sprayed Twinkling H2O's - very messy! Using the same colours, I painted a panel which - [Colour!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/colour/) - I've been having fun with Carolyn Dube's Use Your Words workshop again. This is Mondays project. I started off creating the word 'colour' using my homemade stencil and acrylic paint, then masked the letters while I created the background using spray inks. Next I took a piece of yesterday's background sheet with circles punched out - [Being Brave!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/being-brave/) - I have managed to get behind with virtually all my self-imposed deadlines at the moment, so I have decided to be very brave, not to even try playing catch up, but just to do the things I feel drawn to! So... today I finished last Friday's assignment from Carolyn Dube's Use Your Words workshop. This - [29 Faces - # 15](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-15/) - Still playing catch-up... ... but I think she's my favourite so far! - [29 Faces - # 14](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-14/) - I'm still behind with my faces, but here is number 14. Once again she's drawn in pencil and coloured with acrylic paint and watercolour pencils. I really must try drawing with paint one of these days - I'm sure I would learn a lot from it - it just a case of plucking up the - [Thank You!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/thank-you/) - I knew it was a mistake mentioning how well I was doing with my faces yesterday - I'm now officially running late! But I did finish this piece for the second lesson in Carolyn Dube's Use Your Words workshop. This workshop is just so much fun! I used my home made stencils combined with Twinkling - [29 Faces - # 13](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-13/) - Almost half-way, and still keeping up - I'm impressed with myself! Here's todays offering. I'm told she is recognisable today - I must be getting better! Do you know who she is? - [Faces and Letters!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/faces-and-letters/) - Today I have been getting really messy! In addition to creating my face for 29 faces, I've been playing with letter stencils. I created today's face using pencil, watercolour pencils and acrylic paint. She still doesn't look entirely like the one I was copying, but I'm getting better! I signed up for this free workshop, - [29 Faces - # 11](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-11/) - Today was the first time in ages that I had a page with no gesso to work on. It was great not to have the smudging problem! I drew her in pencil, then coloured her using a mixture of acrylic paint and watercolour pencils. Unfortunately when I came to paint the background, the paint leached - [29 Faces - # 10](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-10/) - Today I decided to have another try at an older face. She still doesn't look much like her original, but I'm beginning to be able to recognise the things that are wrong. I'm seeing more clearly! I definitely enjoy using a mixture of acrylic paint and water colour pencils for the colouring. - [Blending and Faces!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blending-and-faces/) - Today I played digital blending as well as faces. This started as an abstract created using Twinkling H2O's. Then I scanned it and played digital blending with a photo of sand patterns. This is the result. Todays face got the works! I was so determined she wouldn't have any strange paint marks today that I - [29 Faces - # 8](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-8/) - Back to a younger face today! I'm quite pleased with the way she turned out, except for the blue shading round her mouth (paint bleed through from the next page!). I gave her a wash of acrylic paint under the pencils to try and hide the blue, but as you can see... it didn't work! - [29 Faces - # 7](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-7/) - Today I chose a less glamorous, older face to copy. I think I've aged her by at least 10 years, and made her look very unhappy as well! I'll keep trying! ... back to the sketchbook for some more practice! - [29 Faces - # 6](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-6/) - I'm a bit happier with todays face... ... she still doesn't look too much like the image I was copying - but that's what this exercise is all about - practising to improve! - [29 Faces - # 5](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-5/) - I'm not as happy with today's face... ... she started out alright, then seemed to go wrong with the colouring. I may try painting over her and trying again ... or then again I might just move on to something new! - [29 Faces - # 4](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-4/) - I really enjoyed copying a face from a magazine yesterday, so I thought I'd do another one today. I had a lot more confidence today! I really like the dry watercolour pencil effect and the outline hair. What do you think? - [29 Faces - # 2](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-no-2/) - Here's my face number two. I drew her in pencil, then coloured her using acrylic paint and watercolour pencils. I've been busy finishing my game board for last weeks Life Book lesson and hope to post it tomorrow. - [29 Faces - # 3](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-3/) - Today I tried copying a face from a magazine. In addition I only used dry watercolour pencils, and deliberately left the hair as just an impression. She doesn't look much like her original (can you guess who she is?), but I'm quite pleased with the result. - [Finally finished!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/finally-finished/) - Yes! - I have finally finished my game board for last weeks Life Book lesson from Kelly Hoernig. I ran out of space on my board to glue my car, so I attached it to a hinge so that it could be flipped to see the board underneath. I may add some flowers to the - [29 Faces 2013](https://www.artimess.co.uk/29-faces-2013/) - February is the month Ayala Art challenges us to draw 29 faces. I missed the February challenge last year, but took part in the May and September challenges and was amazed how the discipline of drawing faces every day for a month improved my face drawing and painting skills. So here's my first face for - [Time Flies!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/time-flies/) - Doesn't the time just fly by! I can't believe it's a week since I last posted here. In between a very special birthday, the celebration of which got delayed by snow over the entire country, followed by a nasty tummy bug which laid me out for a day, I'm only just catching up with myself - [Blended Mandalas](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blended-mandalas/) - I just had to play with Wednesday's Mandala! Do you like my animation? If you missed it, click your browser refresh button to see the animation repeat. Not brilliant - but not bad for a first attempt! I started off by inverting the original, then added colour changes and blends to the mixture. - [Monochrome Mandala!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/monochrome-mandala/) - After playing with Dion Dior's technique yesterday I had to have a go at drawing a mandala using it. This is what I came up with. I drew and coloured the mandala using a white watercolour pencil together with a Sakura pen-touch pen for the highlights/outlines. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. What - [Celebration of Light](https://www.artimess.co.uk/celebration-of-light/) - I've been a bit caught up in the mechanics of website maintenance for the last few days and have been neglecting my mess-making creativity! Thank goodness for the Monday Life Book lesson from Dion Dior this week - it was just what I needed to get back into mess making again! Starting with a piece - [New Blooms](https://www.artimess.co.uk/new-blooms/) - Ever since Tam published this week's Life Book 2013 Lesson from Christy Tomlinson, every spare minute I've had has been devoted to getting messy playing with the new techniques Christy taught us. Along the way I had some leftover paint which I used with a flower stencil to create an image. I scanned this together - [Getting Messy!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/getting-messy/) - Once again I'm playing catch-up! I've been having so much fun getting messy, I just haven't had the time to post the images! On Friday I played with some embossed flowers, trying to colour them using a couple of ink pads. It didn't work quite as I planned. Instead of nice clean colour on the - [Catching Up!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/catching-up/) - I'm playing catch up today - it's been a really busy week! On Tuesday, I created a couple of backgrounds using a mixture of acrylic paint and ink. I scanned them both into the computer then added a photograph of some flowers and blended them to create this image. On Wednesday I followed a video - [Celebration Journey!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/celebration-journey/) - I have finally finished part two of Life Book Week 1! I had so much fun creating this - thank you Tam for such a great lesson! I chose an aeroplane as my mode of travel as I have have only just got my passport and have never yet flown. I intend to take my - [Scary Stuff!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/scary-stuff/) - Yesterday I got the fright of my life. I was totally absorbed in capturing this shot when a dog barked right behind me. What made it worse was that I was precariously perched on the edge of the cliff path, and I suffer from a fear of heights! This was the result. Not being one - [Altered Railings!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/altered-railings/) - Yesterday's photo shoot for this picture took place on a road bridge through some railings. Needless to say I took pictures of the railings, and although they didn't feature in the day's picture, I thought they'd be fun to play blending with. Do you like the result? - [Life Book 2013!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/life-book-2013/) - Yes! - the first Life Book class for 2013 is up and is not disappointing. As always - Tam gives such excellent value for money. This weeks lesson has two parts to it! This is my interpretation of the first part. I created the background using neocolour crayons, then drew my Fairy Art Mother in - [Rose Blend](https://www.artimess.co.uk/rose-blend/) - I've decided to try and take a photo every day this year to improve my photography. Yesterday I took a photo of my Christmas roses, but you know me ... I can't help but play blending games with my photos! I just love the way it turned out! What do you think? You can see - [Expansion!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/expansion/) - Do you remember the new stencils I got just before Christmas? I found a small tub of Light Moulding Paste and decided to see how it worked with the stencils. I applied the moulding paste through the stencil then painted it with metallic acrylic paint when it was dry. I just love the texture that - [Happy New Year!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/happy-new-year/) - I hope you all had as good a holiday as I did. I'm busy now catching up and getting ready for the new year! Part of my preparations included completing this free workbook from Susannah Conway. It really is my type of workbook with lots of space for drawing and doodling! This is my response - [Happy Christmas!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/happy-christmas/) - [Ink Blots and Stars](https://www.artimess.co.uk/ink-blots-and-stars/) - I treated myself to a set of drawing inks a while ago and created this background with them. I played around with it a bit to give it a bit more depth and have used it a few times already, including on the inside cover of my new notebook. But you know me - never - [New Notebook](https://www.artimess.co.uk/new-notebook/) - Once or twice a year I make myself a new notebook. My notebooks are a cross between a diary, an art journal, a planner, a message book and a reference book. Basically, everything I do every day is recorded in some way, shape, or form in my notebook. Because I'm a visual person, I like - [Christmas Angel](https://www.artimess.co.uk/christmas-angel/) - Seeing all the beautiful Christmas cards people have been making out there, I thought it was maybe time I put my newly learned skills to use making some Christmas cards to send to my friends. With that in mind, I set about drawing a Christmas Angel. I drew her using pencil, then coloured her using - [Foam Embossing](https://www.artimess.co.uk/foam-embossing/) - Still playing catch up with Life Book 2012, Jodi Ohl showed us how to make these embossed foam embellishments - really cool! They really are very simple and cheap to make and can be made into simple embellishments, buttons or anything else you can dream up! Heat up the foam with a heat gun and - [Playing with Stencils!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-with-stencils/) - Yesterday, Christmas came early! I got these Texture Stencils from "artistcellar" in the post! So much fun! I started out by adding colour washes with Inktense pencils to some watercolour paper to create an under layer to the stencils. I used the Inktense pencils because once they've been activated they become permanent. When the colour - [Hope Fairy](https://www.artimess.co.uk/hope-fairy/) - Phew! - that was one busy week! But I'm back now and still playing catch up on the Life Book 2012 course - I'd better get a move on as I've just signed up for the 2013 course! This is my interpretation of Adriana Almanza's Hope Fairy lesson from Week 31. I had so much - [Lady Rosina](https://www.artimess.co.uk/lady-rosina/) - After the tension of posting something new every day it was nice to take things at a bit more leisurely pace when following last weeks Life Book 2012 lesson with Adriana Almanza. I was a bit apprehensive about it before I started because I've never been good at stylised faces like these - but I - [Made it ....](https://www.artimess.co.uk/made-it/) - Yeah! - I made it through the month .... and to celebrate I created this poster! I coloured the background using Derwent Inktense Pencils, then drew, cut out and stuck the large 'Made It' letters to the background. I drew the rest of the letters, outlined them using a uniball eye pen, and coloured them - [Painty Tissue!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/painty-tissue/) - Today I created a batch of coloured backgrounds in different colours using inktense pencils and neocolour crayons. I often do this when I can't think what to do as I find it generally sets me off on a new creative path. Today was no exception! During the background process I ended up with several very - [Playing Digital!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing-digital/) - Today I felt like having a digital day. I started with an image of a feather and turned it into a digital brush. Then I played with brush settings, altering its spacing, randomising it, and flipping its axes. I put each new variation on a new layer then added coloured layers and blending into the - [Green Mandala!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/green-mandala/) - Today I felt like drawing a mandala - they're so meditative to create! This one decided it wanted to be green. I drew the outline in pencil, then inked it using a uniball eye pen. I coloured the mandala using Derwent Inktense pencils. I originally planned to add some doodling at the end, but I rather - [Leftover Paint!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/leftover-paint/) - Whenever I have any leftover paint on my pallet at the end of a project, I brush and /or apply it randomly to a page in my notebook then scan it into the computer. Today I started off with a scan of some leftover acrylic paint then added the Socrates quotation using digital text. A - [Digital Wizardry!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-wizardry/) - Today I started out by sticking a mixture of all kinds of paper to a sheet of watercolour paper. I followed this with a light brayering of white acrylic paint to blend everything together. Then decided I would play some more with the flower stencil I used yesterday and ended up with this image. I - [More Winter Flowers!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-winter-flowers/) - It must be the effect of all the dull winter days at the moment, I just keep wanting to play with flower images, so here are some more winter flowers! I started off by stencilling the big flowers onto the watercolour paper using acrylic paint - messy, but fun! Then I added some more flowers - [Monochromatic!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/monochromatic/) - I got a bit behind with the Life Book 2012 classes and have only just finished Rhomany's monochromatic lesson from last week. One of the disadvantages to having given away most of my craft supplies at the end of last year (read more about that here) is that I don't have a lot of the - [Thanksgiving Leaves!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/thanksgiving-leaves/) - Remember me saying I had loads of leaf print images to use up? - well here are two more! Although we don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in the Uk, I kind of wish we did. So I added a quotation which I think says it all. I used my home-made font, 'Handwritten', from yesterday for the - [Font Fun!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/font-fun/) - I've been playing with the iFontMaker app again - it's just so much fun! Today I used a stylus instead of my finger, so I got slightly less wobbly results than last time. This font is called "Handwritten" and you can download it by clicking HERE if you like it :) I created the background - [Doodle Flowers](https://www.artimess.co.uk/doodle-flowers/) - Yesterday I got talked into trying out a new app on my iPad called Bamboo Paper. It's a notebook that you can paint and scribble in. The first thing I wanted to know after I'd played around with the different tools and produced a few doodles was - "Can I export the images?" So I - [Winter Flowers](https://www.artimess.co.uk/winter-flowers/) - After yesterday's disaster I thought I'd keep things nice and simple today. I felt like playing with bright colours so I got my Inktense pencils out. I created the flowers and the background using the Inktense pencils, then added some foliage using digital brushes after scanning it into the computer. I love the way the - [Purple Haze!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/purple-haze/) - Today's piece underwent radical transformation in it's early stages. The first layer was a complete disaster - but it did add some texture to the piece. It all started when I emptied my pencil sharpener and discovered amongst the wood shavings remnants of lots of beautiful colours of water soluble pencil lead. I had the - [More Cling Film!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-cling-film/) - Following on from yesterday, I thought I'd create a background on glossy card using the distress ink pad and cling film technique. When I saw how it turned out, I decided to scan it, add some digital brushes which I created from a couple of my own photos and the Thich Nhat Hanh quotation. - [Moving Forward](https://www.artimess.co.uk/moving-forward/) - Today I played catch up with my Life book 2012 classes. I completed Lesson 29 from Jodi Ohl. The lesson started with a positive letter to my younger self which I then tore up and used as the basis for the piece. For the next layer I added some printed tissue paper followed by a - [Snowflakes](https://www.artimess.co.uk/snowflakes/) - Seeing all Leah's snow pictures last week got me thinking about snowflakes, which in turn inspired me to get some paper and scissors and start cutting! I know snowflakes are supposed to have six sides, but mine has eight - call it artistic license! I coloured the background using Inktense pencils then cut the snowflake - [Digital Hocus Pocus!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-hocus-pocus/) - Today I discovered some photographs on my phone that I had forgotten about and felt in the mood for a little digital hocus pocus. I started out with the photo I took of the rusty seat bracket, duplicated it, inverted the duplicate then blended the two together. Then I added the leftover paint splurge scan - [Knotty Blend! ](https://www.artimess.co.uk/knotty-blend/) - Today I decided to draw a simple knot. I've always been fascinated by the way the lines in knot work overlap and intertwine. I started off by creating a simple background using acrylic paint and a homemade fun foam stamp. When it was dry I drew the knot in the centre of the page, coloured - [Tree of Life](https://www.artimess.co.uk/tree-of-life/) - Browsing through blog posts in my rss reader a while ago, I came across a beautiful image called 'Ablaze' by Kathryn Dyche Dechairo. I was totally inspired! This is where the inspiration took me! I started with a torn magazine collage on watercolour paper. I covered that with a sheet of crumpled tissue paper stuck - [Green Goddess](https://www.artimess.co.uk/green-goddess/) - I started today by painting a couple of backgrounds using derwent watercolour pencils, a blue one and a yellow/green one. While I was waiting for them to dry I felt prompted to draw a female face on the yellow/green background. So here she is - my Green Goddess! I drew her face in pencil, outlined - [Digital Tree!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-tree/) - Today I just couldn't resist adding some digital leaves to my tree of life. Then I got carried away playing with different blends! I couldn't decide which one I liked the best so I collected them all together. Which is your favourite? - [Take Two...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/take-two/) - Take two images - in this case two leaf prints. Scan into the computer, then work some digital blending magic .... .... et voila! - one new piece of art. Both images have acrylic paint leaf prints on a background. The top background was coloured using neocolour crayons, the bottom background was painted with white - [Working Smaller](https://www.artimess.co.uk/working-smaller/) - Today I thought I'd have a break from working on water-colour paper and play with some glossy white card. I got some new distress ink pads and was itching to try them out! I applied the ink to the card using a pad of tissue, then sprayed the card with water to blend and create - [Just Doodling...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/just-doodling/) - Continuing on from yesterday, I thought I'd stay with the small size and doodle some zentangles. The inspiration for this came from the latest issue of Craft Stamper Magazine. I created the border round the edges first, then stamped the mouse and text (very old freebies from a magazine), then filled the remaining space with - [Peace](https://www.artimess.co.uk/peace/) - The other day I downloaded the latest free ebook from Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine and was inspired by Lisa Engelbrecht to create this. I hand drew the letters in pencil, then coloured them using Derwent Inktense pencils and outlined them using Stabilo point 88 pens. After I scanned the image into the computer, I tried - [Let us not...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/let-us-not/) - I'm still ploughing my way through my pile of leaf prints from the end of September. Today I decided to add a quotation using digital text to this one, and a bit of digital blending for good measure! The original image had an acrylic paint background with acrylic paint leaf prints on top. - [Digital Blending!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/digital-blending/) - Today I felt like playing digital, so I started out with one of my leftover acrylic paint creations and a photograph I took showing the beautiful autumn leaf colours. Then I played digital blending. You really need to look at the big version to see the full effect of the final result, but I really - [Celebrating!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/celebrating-2/) - This weeks Life Book lesson is about celebrating the things we have achieved this year. I am very fortunate in having many things to celebrate - having given up my security to travel, successfully navigating the subsequent soul searching and releasing that went with it, resettling in a new location, studying and developing my spiritual - [Making a Mess!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/making-a-mess/) - Making a mess and not trying too hard always seems to produce the best artwork! Today's piece of work started as a way of using up some leftover paint. I added some gel medium transfers to it, but they went wrong and came out as grey squares. Finally I thought I'd try out a paper - [AEDM 2012!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/aedm-2012/) - When I started AEDM (Art Every Day Month) this time last year, we were in the process of selling the house prior to setting off on our travels. It's been a very exciting year, we've experienced a lot and had so much fun along the way! Now - one year later, we have settled near - [Magic!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/magic/) - This piece has magic built into every part of it from the background to the magical font making app. First of all there's the magic of the water-soluble neocolour crayons and the way the colours blend together when you add water. There's the magic of what happens to those wet colours when you add sea - [Doodle Magic!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/doodle-magic/) - This catch-up on the Life Book Course came from Lesson 20 with Jodi Ohl. I started out by colouring the background using Derwent Inktense pencils. For the doodling and text I used a uniball eye pen, then coloured the doodles using neocolour crayons and a graphite pencil. The two stamps were hand made using pieces - [Freehand Mandala](https://www.artimess.co.uk/freehand-mandala/) - Playing catchup with the Life Book Course, today I followed Tam's Freehand Mandala class from week 36. I hand drew it in pencil, then coloured it using Derwent Inktense Pencils. When I had got to this point with colouring it, I couldn't decide whether to colour the rest of the background in or to leave - [Playing...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/playing/) - Today I felt like playing digital! I took the last two hand drawn mandalas that I created and played digital blending with them - great fun! I think my favourite is the top right one. Which one do you like best? - [Another Seed...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/another-seed/) - Here's my version of another Seed of Life mandala from the talented Guada. I had a lot of fun making this one! I drew it in pencil then coloured it using a mixture of Derwent Inktense Pencils, Lumiere paint, acrylic paint, graphite pencil, uniball eye pen, and uni paint marker. The colour was built up - [Celebrating!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/celebrating/) - I really enjoyed this weeks Life Book lesson with Samantha Kira Harding. Each layer had its own special meaning and took courage to cover and move on. But I'm so glad I did - the finished piece has so much depth. This is the first scan taken after the first three layers. Layer one was - [Seed Of Life](https://www.artimess.co.uk/seed-of-life/) - I've just finished colouring in the mandala I drews for the first part of Guada's free Seed of Life course. I love her classes and the meditative discipline of creating these mandalas. I drew this one in pencil then coloured it using Derwent Inktense Pencils and a graphite pencil. I'm looking forward to starting this - [Landscape](https://www.artimess.co.uk/leaf-print-landscape/) - The leaf I used to print with on the post Newspaper Collage created a rather unusual pattern which I thought looked rather like a tree. So I thought I'd have a go at creating a landscape made from leaf prints. This is the result! I started off with a layer of white gesso to which - [Collage Lady](https://www.artimess.co.uk/collage-lady/) - Being without any internet for the past few days, I have had more time to get messy with paint and gel medium! Collage Lady is another catch up from the Life Book Course. Loosely following Mystele's week 22 lesson I created a collage from torn magazine pages using a picture of a woman as the - [Badger](https://www.artimess.co.uk/badger/) - We've been battling with our internet provider this week and have been without service for nearly two days! It's just come back up so I'm making hay while the sun shines! I wasn't in the mood for crochet (this weeks Life Book lesson) so I thought I'd play catch up with one of the previous - [Spiritual Growth](https://www.artimess.co.uk/spiritual-growth/) - Last weeks life book lesson with Tam was to create a mixed media collage using paper and material celebrating where you are now using no more than two words. I love working with material, so I just had to have a go at this lesson! I chose Spiritual Growth for my two words as above - [Another Mandala](https://www.artimess.co.uk/another-mandala/) - I so enjoyed making Guada's mandala the other day that I thought I'd have a go at another one. I used the same template just joined the lines up differently. all the techniques were the same as before - neocolour background, Rapidograph pen and Inktense Pencil lines and shading, but the result is so different. - [Autumn Blues!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/autumn-blues/) - I love the autumn when the leaves turn such beautiful colours on the trees. As they fall to the ground it's the perfect time of year to satisfy the child in me by doing some leaf printing. A few mornings ago, I came back from my early morning walk with a large bag of assorted - [Guada's Mandalas](https://www.artimess.co.uk/guadas-mandalas/) - I love Guada's mandalas, and so was thrilled to have a lesson from her as this week's Life Book class. Her instructions are always so easy to follow and even though I started out copying her design the end result is so totally different! The background was created first using neocolour crayons on copy paper, - [Budding Potters!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/budding-potters/) - While Bry and I were travelling, we got the chance to do something we had both always wanted to try - make clay pots using a potters wheel. It was great fun and we both got covered in clay despite the t-shirts we were given to cover our clothes with. After careful instructions from Roy, - [Newspaper Collage](https://www.artimess.co.uk/newspaper-collage/) - Newspaper is one of my favourite materials - it is so versatile! You can use it to protect your work areas, you can cut it up and make things with it, you can build things with it, you can use it for papier mache, you can take prints from it, you can use it in - [New Identity](https://www.artimess.co.uk/new-identity/) - As part of re-creating my identity back here at Artimess, I decided to design myself some business cards. The front was no trouble, but I thought I'd like to put some of my artwork on the back. I started by creating this Artimess zentangle: I used A6(105mm x 148mm) white art board and drew with - [Coming Home!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/coming-home/) - After my travels over at Face of Love, I've decided to return to Artimess to continue my messy exploration of all things creative. I thought it looked a bit bland when it was finished so I coloured it with a mixture of alcohol inks and staz-on ink pads :) Then I got the - [Celtic Knots from 'Thursdays with Earl'!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/celtic-knots-from-thursdays-with-earl/) - I have been following 'Thurdays with Earl' on the Jessica Sprague website for quite a few weeks now and have really enjoyed the different lessons he has taught. Last week Earl taught us how to make Celtic Knot Designs, something I have wanted to have a go at doing for ages! So I drew my - [A mess, a scan and some blending ...](https://www.artimess.co.uk/a-mess-a-scan-and-some-blending/) - It started with an A4 sheet of acetate. I added a generous covering of pva glue followed by a dash of alcohol ink, some lumiere paint, a few sprinkles of glitter and some torn pieces of newspaper. I covered this with three layers of tissue paper (and some more pva glue) then left it to - [Inspiration Wednesdays](https://www.artimess.co.uk/inspiration-wednesdays/) - Yes ... I know today is Thursday ... I'm a little behind this week! But I was inspired by Donna Downey's Inspiration Wednesdays post to create this collage. I created the background back at the beginning of April and scanned it into the computer to use as a base for some of my designs. To - [More Blended Images and a mini-book!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/more-blended-images-and-a-mini-book/) - I've been really messy with glue and paint and glitter .... but I think the results were worth it! I scanned the results, then blended them to create these images. I was inspired by this episode of "Thursdays with Earl" to make this mini-book. It's made from a single sheet of 12x12 card and - [Making Arti - Mess!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/making-arti-mess/) - Cupcakes, bubbles and hearts! - that's what I've been busy playing with - and in the process I've managed to get covered in Ink :) This is just one hand! The first thing I made was this Heart Book which I covered in home made Bubble Paper. Next I made this Paper Cupcake - [Blending Images!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/blending-images/) - After I've had fun making a mess, doing my creative bit ... I like nothing better than scanning my work into the computer to see how I can change it by blending it with other images. Here are my two latest creations! This is a combination of the distorted video image blended with the spritzed - [Creative on Skype!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/creative-on-skype/) - My brother and I signed up for a free Skype account each last week. (Free video/telephone link over the internet with other Skype users) It's really great ... but sometimes the video link can be a bit ... well just odd! Here's a screen shot of a video image when it was playing games: - [Just thought I'd try adding some images ....](https://www.artimess.co.uk/just-thought-id-try-adding-some-images/) - I just thought I'd try adding some images ... I love recycling things ... this is my version of a baked bean tin inspired by a combination of two articles in the SSP Guild online magazine. It was made using a combination of acetate, alcohol inks, tissue paper glitter and lots of glue ... very messy!! ... - [Black Fingers!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/black-fingers/) - I've got lovely black fingers tonight! ... 'cos I've been busy making adjustments to my business cards. This involved printing labels to stick on the back of my cards ... but as my cards have a printed black background I thought the labels should have the same so that they didn't stand out like sore - [Hello world!](https://www.artimess.co.uk/hello-world-2/) - Hello out there! I've just managed to upload a new header and will be playing with all the other settings in the very near future. I will be using this blog to showcase my artistic ramblings and general messiness as soon as I have figured out how all the buttons work :) I look forward ## Pages - [Creative Journey](https://www.artimess.co.uk/creativejourney/) -
