  • Playing with Mandalas

Thinking about mandalas, I created this hand drawn one in my small journal the other day.

    Playing with Mandalas

But as usual, I couldn’t just leave it at that. I had to play with it once I’d scanned it. I started off by adding some ‘twirl’, then blended the two together to come up with the final version.

    Temperature Changes

Once in the blending mode, I find it’s difficult to stop! This image is a blend of two paintings to which I added the Maslow quotation.

    Inter–connected–ness–

Ever since I can remember I have always believed in the interconnectedness of everything. So when I came across this Pueblo Indian saying in Way of the Doll: Art and Craft of Personal Transformation by Cassandra Light, I couldn’t help but feel a journal page needed to be created.

    "It takes every single person..."

I decided to use my recycled journal, and created this double page spread using acrylic paint, moulding paste and a linocut stamp. I added the quotation by cutting up a digital printout of it, glueing it down then adding paint, stamping and permanent marker to help it to blend into the page. Did I mention that I printed it on yellow paper?

    And talking of blending…

"It takes every single person..." blend

…I just couldn’t resist the digital kind!

    Call of the Paint!

I thought it was about time I caught up with posting some more pictures from my journal.

    WFS 19th - 20th January

This is my interpretation of the last of the sketch noting prompts. The first one is pretty simple to interpret, but can you guess what the second one is all about?

    WFS - 21st January

I ran out of time on the 21st and spent five minute drawing these interlocking shapes.

    WFS - 22nd Jauary

I started this page off using water colour pencils and neocolour ll crayons, then I just couldn’t resist the call of the paint any longer! I used acrylic paint and stencils to finish it off.

    WFS - 23rd January

This last page was created using acrylic paint and stencils.

    Another Journal Page!

Following on from yesterday’s success, I’ve managed to create another journal page using the scanned digital technique. Yay!

    Blues Journal Background Page

This is the background I created in my altered journal using acrylic paint, home made stamps and stencils.

    2014 Journal Page 2

And this is my digital interpretation of todays ‘When Frogs Sing’ journal prompt.

    Spots

I finally got around to processing the second of my recycled cardboard paintings from the other day. I created it using acrylic Paint, acrylic ink, stencils and moulding paste.

    It's In The Detail!

You can’t really see the relief on the big picture so I took a couple of detail pictures to show it off. It makes a lovely textured surface – I really love texture!

    Altered Spots

And you know what – I haven’t played blending for ages! So I just had to try a little blend here! I really like how this one turned out. What do you think?

Word for the Year – 2014

Ive been wanting to keep a Journal for a long time now but haven’t managed to get started. So when I saw Rhomany’s ‘When Frogs Sing’, Journalling course I signed up for the year! I had to smile to myself while watching todays video – I have this little problem – I love making mixed media backgrounds, but I’m not so good at adding the journalling. But then I thought “why don’t I add it digitally” – so that’s what I’m doing!

    Brights Journal Background

This is the scan of the first page which I created in my altered book/journal using acrylic paint and a home made stamp.

    2014 Journal Page 1

And this is the page after adding digital text and images. Journey is my word for the year and Badger is my totem animal for 2014. My colour for the year is Phtholo Blue Green Shade.

Yeah – my first journal page complete!

    Mixed Media Madness!

I’ve been working on a mixed media piece in my new journal for the last couple of days and experimenting with the camera on my iPhone as well.

Inspired by this post from Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, I spent a while cutting out this quotation to use on my new page.

    "Live your beliefs..."

After I’d finished the cutting out, I downloaded the Snapseed app and took this photograph to play with on my new app!

Today I was working on the background, and scanned in the different stages to use as future collage material. As is often the case, I got sidetracked into doing some digital blending 🙂

    Blended Background

This is the result – pretty colourful, yes? You’ll have to wait till tomorrow to see the finished page as the final layer is still drying at the moment!
